1️⃣ لا أقبل شيئاً على أنّه حقٌّ، ما لم أعرف بوضوحٍ أنّه كذلك، أي يجب أن أتجنَّب التسرُّع وألّا أتشبث بالأحكام السابقة، وألّا أدخل في أحكامي إلّا ما يتمثَّل لعقلي في وضوحٍ وتميُّزٍ يزول معهما كلَّ شكٍّ.
2️⃣ أن أُقَسِّم كلَّ واحدةٍ من المشكلات التي أبحثها إلى أجزاء كثيرة بقدر المستطاع، وبمقدار ما يبدو ضرورياً لحلِّها على أحسن الوجوه.
3️⃣ أن أرتِّب أفكاري، فأبدأ بالأمور الأكثر بساطةً وأيسرها معرفةً، حتى أصل شيئاً فشيئاً، أو بالتدريج، إلى معرفةٍ أكثرها تعقيداً، مفترضاً ترتيباً، حتى لو كان خياليَّاً، بين الأمور التي لا يسبق بعضها بعضاً.
4️⃣ أن أعمل في جميع الأحوال من الإحصاءات الكاملة والمراجعات الشاملة ما يجعلني على ثقةٍ من أنّني لم أُغفِل شيئاً.
